Discover Tavistock - The Abbey

Talk, Walk and Lunch

Power, politics and wealth. Religion and architecture. An illustrated talk on the formation, growth and demise of Tavistock Abbey, whose history began over 1000 years ago, and its presence in the 21st century.
Arguably Tavistock would not exist today if it was not for Tavistock Abbey, which was founded in 974. Following Henry VIII's dissolution of the Abbey in 1539, some of the pre-dissolution buildings were demolished, although much remains visible today, above and below ground. The 60 minute walk (less than a mile, level walking) which follows the talk will visit the surviving sites of the original Tavistock Abbey and reveal the extent to which its far-reaching influence can still be seen in and around the town today.
Your host and guide for this fascinating event, organised in conjunction with Tavistock Heritage Trust, is Tavistock heritage expert Sue Spackman.
